And on the 8th day, God looked down on his planned paradise and said, "I need a caretaker." So God made a farmer.
제 8일째 되던 날, 하나님은 그가 계획하신 낙원을 내려다 보시고 말씀하셨다. "관리자가 필요하겠는걸." 그래서 하나님은 농부를 만드셨다


God said, "I need somebody willing to get up before dawn, milk cows, work all day in the fields, milk cows again, eat supper and then go to town and stay past midnight at a meeting of the school board." So God made a farmer.

하나님은 말씀하셨다. "내겐 동트기 전에 일어나 우유를 짜고 하루 종일 들판에서 일하다가 다시 우유를 짜고, 저녁을 먹은 후 마을로 내려가 교육위원회 모임을 위해 자정이 지나도록 깨어있을 누군가가 필요해." 그래서 하나님이 농부를 만드셨다.


God said, "I need somebody willing to sit up all night with a newborn colt. And watch it die. Then dry his eyes and say, 'Maybe next year.' I need somebody who can shape an ax handle from a persimmon sprout, shoe a horse with a hunk of car tire, who can make harness out of haywire, feed sacks and shoe scraps. And who, planting time and harvest season, will finish his forty-hour week by Tuesday noon, then, pain'n from 'tractor back,' put in another seventy-two hours." So God made a farmer.

하나님은 말씀하셨다. "내겐 밤새 갓태어난 망아지와 밤새 앉아 있어줄, 그리고 그것이 죽어가는 것을 본 후, 눈물을 닦으며 '아마도 다음해에는 다르겠지'이라고 말할 누군가가 필요해. 나는 감나무 싹을 다듬을 수 있고, 차 타이어 조각으로 말에게 신을 신기고, 건초를 묶는 철사로 마구를 만들 수 있는 누군가가 필요해. 계절에 따라 수확하며, 40시간의 노동을 화요일 정오에 마치고, 72시간동안 트렉터를 끄는 고통을 감당하는 누군가." 그래서 신은 농부를 만드셨다.


God had to have somebody willing to ride the ruts at double speed to get the hay in ahead of the rain clouds and yet stop in mid-field and race to help when he sees the first smoke from a neighbor's place. So God made a farmer.

하나님은 누군가에게 비구름이 오기 전에 건초를 거두기 위해 두배 속도로 바퀴를 돌리는 일과, 이웃집에서 피어나는 첫 연기를 보고 달려가 도와주는 일을 맡길 사람을 만들고 싶어하셨다. 그래서 하나님은 농부를 만드셨다.


God said, "I need somebody strong enough to clear trees and heave bails, yet gentle enough to tame lambs and wean pigs and tend the pink-combed pullets, who will stop his mower for an hour to splint the broken leg of a meadow lark. It had to be somebody who'd plow deep and straight and not cut corners. Somebody to seed, weed, feed, breed and rake and disc and plow and plant and tie the fleece and strain the milk and replenish the self-feeder and finish a hard week's work with a five-mile drive to church.

하나님은 말씀하셨다. "내겐 나무와 무거운 마구간 칸막이를 치울 수 있을 정도로 힘이 세지만, 양을 길들이고 돼지에게 이유식을 먹이고, 어린 암탉을 단장시킬 정도로 부드럽고, 종달새의 부러진 다리를 치료해주기 위해 잔디 깎는 기계를 한시간 동안 멈출 누구가가 필요해. 깊고 똑바르게 밭을 갈지만, 모퉁이를 건드리지 않을. 씨를 뿌리고, 잡초를 뽑고, 먹이를 먹이고, 사육하고, 써레질을 하고, 쟁기질을 하고, 심고, 양털을 짜고, 우유를 짜고, 사료공급기를 채우고, 고단한 한 주간의 일을 끝내고 5마일 밖에 있는 교회로 운전해 가는 누군가가 필요해."


"Somebody who'd bale a family together with the soft strong bonds of sharing, who would laugh and then sigh, and then reply, with smiling eyes, when his son says he wants to spend his life 'doing what dad does.'" So God made a farmer.

"그의 아들이 자신도 아빠와 같은 삶을 살겠다고 말하면 웃고, 한숨 쉬다, 미소띤 눈으로 대답할, 강한 연대로 가족을 함께 묶을 그 누군가가 필요해" 그래서 하나님은 농부를 만드셨다.

트럭으로 유명한 닷지 램의 "Farmer" 광고는 2013년 수퍼볼 광고로 방송된 것으로, 1978년 방송인 폴 하비가 미국 농업 교육 진흥회(FAA)에서 연설한 연사를 영상과 조합하여 보여주는 형식으로 광고를 진행한다.


농부에 대한 찬가와도 같은 이 내용은 종교적 내용에 관계없이라도 미국의 많은 농부와 시청자들의 가슴을 울렸고, 결국 Adweek 2013년 수상, 타임지 선정 "최고의 수퍼볼 광고 19편"등에 선정되었다.
