Environment, Social, Culture

This project is made to settle the school, improve its image and help the  villagers have a better school that they can count on in the future. Kang Hwa Do, the school is located is a historical island in Korea. It is one of the origin places of the nation people. And here Koreans fought 40 years to save the country against Mongol in 13th century. You can see many historic remains and prehistoric dolmens and also beautiful landscape of seashore and mountains during camp. All participants will have a chance to learn more about the history of the place, and to increase their knowledge through intercultural exchange among each other. For that, they will work together with the teachers and students in the field, clean and do the general maintenance around village in the island. You’ll be working 5 to 6 hours per day in the field and yard. (Each time you will be sometimes provided with eating between meals.

Your accommodation is the dormitory of Mari school.

- Weather

It will be quite hot and humid, with some possibility of rain(often), so please 

bring your sun-block cream and raincoat.

<Study part>

Cultural exchange with Korean college students, experience Korean history and     different culture. You are very welcome to spread and share your cultures to the alternative school students or village students.

<Free Time>

Historically, Kanghwado has been an import!ant place to Koreans since the Stone      Age. There are manyhistorical sightseeing places from dolmens to Kanghwado Convention in 1876. It will be the time to learn Korean history and culture. You can hang out with friends in the ocean, in your free time.

Service Civil International (SCI) - Korea is a voluntary service organization as a NGO with 4 branches, SCI-Korea was established in 1965. Our aims are to promote world peace, international understanding and solidarity, social justice, sustainable development, and respect for the environment through volunteering. SCI believes that all the people are capable of living together with mutual respect and without recourse to any form of violence to solve conflicts.

<Mari School>

   Mari School: It is an alternative school to the public school with "Life is heaven" as a motto. The theme of our program is "meaningful labor, culture exchange, history"   encircling this community based project(work camp). The education system of Mari School is unique. It’s well-rounded curriculum includes not only common school subjects but subjects that are not popularly taught in public school education, such as oriental philosophy, organic agriculture, traditional music, environmentology, dance and carpentering. The school has also self-discipline and recreation activities for its students. There are about 50 students and 15 teachers in this school. The students raise vegetables in the garden by themselves and teachers farm paddy fields. They make their living self-sufficiently. During summer time they want much help especially for weeding and gardening. One of the project aims is collaborating with village people as well. Ultimately, this summer camp will contribute to the development of the school and the community, and encourage the students.
