to the people who understand;
As you could argue that they "copied the holy diver riff" or whatever other statement in relation to the Foo Fighters and holy diver, here is a little musical insight of the riffs;
1. well first, the riff in Something From Nothing (and entire song) is in the key of E minor, while holy diver is in C minor.
2. The riff in itself is basically just going up the minor scale, which in this case, would be E, F#, G. With of course the added D sliding up to the E. Holy Diver being similar, With C, D, Eb. It's not really uncommon. There are plenty of songs that probably use the first 3 diatonic chords of a minor scale.
As you could say they are paying homage to Dio and Holy Diver, that's really up to what the Foo's had in mind when they were writing it. But, it's hard to say they had that Holy Diver in mind. Unless of course, they said it themselves. From personal experience, Ive came up with plenty of riffs without a certain song in mind, that ended up sounding like another song coincidentally. So that could have very well been the case. That's just my personal thoughts though. :
