가장 미국적인 사이키델릭을 들려줬던 밴드의 마지막 스튜디오레코딩.

the Band - Grateful Dead

Jam bands, Psychedelia, Woodstock, Summer of Love
이 단어들을 보고 가슴이 뛰는 이라면 그들의 주문에 빠져들 준비는 끝난 것!

6,70년대 히피와 사이키델릭을 대표하는 그들은 차트성적, 앨범판매고는
초라했지만 오직 그들만이 할 수 있는 몽환적인 라이브와 
rock, folk, bluegrass, blues, psychedelia이 혼합된 특유의 음악으로 전설이 됐다.

초창기는 San Francisco Bay Area에서 Ken Kesey's Acid Tests로 잘 알려진 
사이키델릭 파티들에서 연주를 해나갔고 LSD 매약업자들의 지원을 받았다.
여러 공연을 해나가며 입지를 다져가던 그들은 Warner Bros. 와의
계약을 체결하면서 레코딩 커리어를 시작하게 됐다.
하지만 '67에 발표한 셀프타이틀 앨범은 워너뮤직에
십만불의 빚을 남길 정도로 참담한 실패를 기록한다.

앨범의 실패와는 별개로 그들은 라이브로 꾸준히 그들의 이름을 알려갔고
'67의 the Monterey Pop Festival과 '69의 Woodstock의 무대에 서게된다.
라이브연주가 그들의 전부라 해도 과언이 아닐 정도로
환상적인 무대와 사운드를 보여준 그들은 걸작으로 꼽히는
Fillmore West에서의 공연실황을 담은 라이브 앨범"Live/Dead" (1969)를 발표하고
이어 발표된 두 명반 "Workingman's Dead"(1970), "American Beauty"(1970)으로 상업적 성공까지 거두게된다.

이후 1995년 기타리스트 Jerry Garcia의 죽음까지 계속된 그들의 활동은
(제리의 죽음으로 실질적인 해체가 이루어지기 직전까지도
그들의 공연은 항상 Deadheads라 불리는 그들의 팬들로 가득찼다) 
the Doors와 Jefferson Airplane의 명성과는 별개로 사이키델릭의 상징적인 위치에 Grateful Dead라는 이름을 새겼다.

the Album - Built to Last

1989년에 발표된 그들의 마지막 스튜디오 앨범인 Built to Last는
이전 앨범이었던 In the Dark(1987)에서 보여주었던 약간은
대중친화적이라 불릴 수 있었던 사운드를 더 발전시켰다.
그들의 사이키델릭적 라이브만 고집하는 소위 Hardcore Deadheads 분들은
이 위대한 밴드의 위대한 음악적 성과물을 놓치는 우를 범하고 있는 것이다.

우리의 두 귀를 감싸는 사운드의 품은 더 깊어졌으며,
Garcia 특유의 끈적한 향기는 전통적인 음악의 아름다움을 안고 Mydland의 키보드 위에서 넘실거린다.

전작의 히트곡 touch of grey를 연상시키지만 좀 더 차분함을 보여주는 Foolish heart
Chris Rea의 초기 히트곡들이 누구의 영향을 받았나 다시 생각하게 해주는 앨범에서 가장 신나는 넘버 Just a little Light
그들의 이전까지 사운드에 가장 들어맞는 소리를 들려주는 Victim or the Crime을 지나면
꿈꾸듯이 아름다운 We Can Run, Standing on the Moon이 우리를 감상에 빠지게 하고
앨범에서 가장 특이한 곡이자 가장 아름다운
아르페지오 피아노와 보컬만으로 이루어진 발라드넘버 I Will Take You Home이 앨범의 커튼을 내린다.

앨범 수록곡 모두 빼어난 음악성을 자랑하며 사이키델릭에 거부반응이 있는
팝팬들에게 Grateful Dead라는 이름에 가장 접근하기 쉬운(그러나 그 안에 담긴 음악은 절대로 쉽지 않은)방법이 될 것이다.

잘 알려지지도 않았고 팬들에게도 외면받는 앨범이지만
Truckin'으로만 그들을 기억하는 팬들에게는 기대치 못한 깜짝 선물이 될
가장 the Deads 답지 않은 the Deads의 앨범이다.
