동아시아연구원(EAI)에서는 대학(원)생을 대상으로 전 지구적 차원에서 인류가 직면하고 있는 중요한 도전과제들에 대해서 비전을 공유해보는 “2016 EPIK 영 리더스 컨퍼런스: 에세이 콘테스트”를 개최하고자 합니다. 2010년부터 연례적으로 개최되어 온 에픽 영 리더스 컨퍼런스는 대학(원)생들의 학술적 교류 장으로 성공적인 역할을 수행해 오고 있습니다.

오늘날 세계화가 진행된 지구사회는 빠르게 변동하고 있으며, 이러한 지구적 전환의 과정에서 발생하는 다양한 수요를 충족시키기 위해서는 조정과 조율이 반드시 필요합니다. 청년층은 이러한 도전과제를 해결하는데 있어서 점차 핵심적인 역할을 하는 당사자로 부상하고 있습니다.  본 에세이 콘테스트는 대학(원)생들이 스스로의 연구주제 전반과 위의 지구적 도전과제들이 연결된 주제들에 대한 이해도를 보여줄 수 있을 뿐만 아니라 컨퍼런스가 진행되는 과정에서 생생한 토론과정을 통해 문제의식을 공유할 수 있는 인적 네트워크를 형성할 수 있는 기회를 제공하고자 합니다. 우리 연구원에서는 많은 대학(원)생들이 “2016 에픽 영 리더스 컨퍼런스”에 참여하여 분석적이고, 창의적이며, 전략적인 사고를 펼쳐 보일 것을 기대합니다.

EAI는 컨퍼런스 참가자들이 국제정치・안보・경제・경영・자연과학 등 다양한 분야에서의 지식과 사고방식을 공유함과 더불어 계속해서 변화하는 세계 속에서 어떤 기여를 할 수 있을 것인지에 대한 고민을 해볼 수 있을 것이라고 믿습니다. 또한 이번 컨퍼런스에 참여함으로써 서로 다른 관점에서 주제를 이해하고 아이디어를 표현하는 과정으로서 학술적 지식과 저술을 심화시킬 수 있기를 바랍니다.

주제
과거와 현재: 어떻게 상호작용 하는가?

현재의 관점에서, 우리는 언제 과거를 되돌아봅니까? 또는 언제 과거가 현재에 영향을 미칩니까? 현재와 과거는 어떻게 상호작용하고 서로에게 어떠한 의미를 부여합니까?

실제로, 과거는 현재를 이해하고 미래에 일어날 사건들을 예측하는데 도움을 줍니다. 뿐만 아니라 과거에 대한 이해의 방식은 종종 현재에서 습득하는 것들에 의해 규정되기도 합니다. 그러나 과거와 현재의 상호작용은 단순히 우리가 세계를 어떻게 이해하는지에 영향을 미치기만 하는 것은 아닙니다. 오히려 과거는 현재의 행위들을 정당화하거나 또는 비정통적인 것으로 만드는데 활용되기도 하며, 현재의 상황 역시 과거의 유산들을 타당하게 여길지 또는 규탄할지를 결정 짓기도 합니다. 이러한 방식으로 과거와 현재는 우리의 의사결정을 특정한 방향으로 이끌며, 어떤 결정에는 권능을 주고 다른 결정에는 제한을 둘지에 영향을 미치면서 상호작용합니다.

과거와 현재 사이의 상호작용은 다차원적이며, 개인부터 국가, 여러 이익집단과 정부기관에 이르기까지 다양한 수준에서 이루어집니다. 예를 들어, 특정 이익집단은 자신들의 목표와 가치를 달성하기 위해 경쟁적이면서 때로는 모순적이기까지 한 과거에 대한 주장을 펼치기도 합니다. 경제적 또는 제도적 발전과정은 그것이 처음 만들어지던 시기의 상황조건에 근거하여 지도자들이 내린 초기 의사결정에 커다란 영향을 받습니다. 역사는 유럽연합(EU)의 사례에서와 같이 국제협력을 촉진시키기도 하지만, 중동이나 동아시아와 같이 오히려 협력을 어렵게 만드는 요인이 되기도 합니다. 현재의 문화적・사회적 규범은 개인차원이든 집단차원이든 특정 사건을 기억하는 방식에 영향을 미칩니다.

2016 에픽 영 리더스 컨퍼런스는 다양한 학문분야의 관점에서 “과거와 현재: 어떻게 상호작용 하는가?”의 질문에 깊은 고민과 빛나는 아이디어를 보여줄 수 있는 대학(원)생들을 전 세계로부터 초대하고자 합니다. 제출되는 에세이는 특별한 형식이나 제한이 있는 것은 아니나, 실제 경험적으로 확인할 수 있는 사례연구나 양적분석을 토대로 한 적절한 연구방법이 뒷받침되어야 함을 유의해 주십시오.

참가 자격요건
에세이 콘테스트는 만 18세부터 35세까지의 국내외 대학생 및 석사과정생(최근 2년 이내 졸업생 포함)을 대상으로 합니다. 참가자들은 제출 필수서류와 함께 반드시 학생증 또는 재학증명서(또는 학위증서)를 제출해야 합니다. (※ 사본제출 가능, 단 발급기관에 확인 가능한 형태여야 함)

- 결과발표일: 2016년 4월 18일(월)

2. 본선
- 제출기한: 2016년 6월 12일(일)
- 결과발표일: 2016년 7월 4일(월)
- 제출서류: 에세이 초안
        에세이는 5,000단어 미만 (초록, 표제어, 참고문헌 제외)
        에세이는 반드시 MS 워드 프로그램으로 작성
        폰트는 Times New Roman, 11포인트, 줄 간격 1.5, 양쪽정렬

3. 결선
- 2016년 7월 31일(일)까지 검토위원의 지적을 반영한 에세이 제출
- 2015년 7월 31일(일)까지 프레젠테이션 파일 제출 (파워포인트 또는 다른 프로그램 가능)

4. 에세이 발표 및 시상식
- 일시: 2016년 8월 10일(수) 오후 2시
- 장소: 국도호텔 3층 튜울립홀
- 결선 진출자들은 본인의 에세이를 발표하고 토론을 진행하기 위해 참석해야 합니다.
시상내역
에세이 콘테스트의 1등과 2등은 2016년 8월 10일(수) 열리는 2016 EPIK 영 리더스 컨퍼런스에서 최종심사를 통해 선정되며, 결선에 진출한 모든 에세이는 EPIK Journals Online에 출판될 예정입니다. (EAI 홈페이지 게재)

- 1등상: 200만원
- 2등상: 100만원

ESSAY COMPETITION

The East Asia Institute(EAI) invites undergraduate and master’s degree students(including recent graduates) to share their visions on the critical challenges facing the global society at the "2016 EPIK Young Leaders Conference: Essay Competition." The EPIK Young Leaders Conference has become an annual academic forum for young leaders since its successful start in 2010.

In light of the rapidly changing dynamics in today’s globalized societies, youth has become a major player in adjusting these transformations to meet different needs. This essay competition strives to offer a great opportunity for students not only to present their own understanding of the issue based on their comprehensive research, but also to expand their human networks with each other by participating in live discussions during the conference altogether. We encourage you to think analytically, creatively, and strategically by participating the "2016 EPIK Young Leaders Conference" in Seoul, Korea.  

The EAI hopes that the participants will be able to share their thoughts on various areas including, but not limited to, international politics, security, economics, business management, and science as well as to ponder their roles in this ever changing world. We expect that participants will develop their academic knowledge and writing quality throughout the process of expressing ideas and learn about different views.

Theme
Past and Present: How Do They Interact?

When, in the present, do we look back into the past? Or when does the past influence the present? How do the present and past interact and give meaning to each other?

Indeed, the past can help us understand the present and anticipate events to come in the future. Likewise, our understanding of the past is often shaped by what we have come to learn in the present. Yet the past and present do not simply interact to influence our understanding of the world. The past can be used to justify or delegitimize actions in the present, just as present circumstances can act to validate or condemn legacies of the past. In this way, the past and present also interact to guide, empower or circumscribe our decisions.

Interactions between the past and the present are multifaceted and can occur at many levels, ranging from individuals to states and from interest groups to government agencies. For example, interest groups offer competing and sometimes contradictory accounts of the past in order to promote their own goals and values. The course of economic or institutional development is largely influenced by the initial decisions made by leaders based on their initial conditions. History can facilitate international cooperation, as in the European Union, or hinder it, as in the Middle East or East Asia. Cultural and social norms influence the way events are remembered, whether individually or collectively.

The 2016 EPIK Young Leaders Conference invites bright scholars from around the world in various academic disciplines to ponder upon the question of “Past and Present: How Do They Interact?”. Be sure to support your argument using appropriate research methods including, but not limited to, illustrative case studies or quantitative analyses.

Eligibility for Participation

The competition is open to domestic/overseas undergraduate and master’s degree students (including the recent graduates who completed the program within the previous 2 years), who were in the age group of 18-35. The participants must submit an attested copy of their student Identity Card (or Degree Certificate for graduates) along with required documents.
Deadlines and Requirements

1. First Round
        Deadline: March 31, 2016
        Result Announcement: April 18, 2016
        Required Documents:
1) Application - Abstract should not exceed 400 words[Download]
2) Resume
3) Copy of a student Identity Card or Degree Certificate for graduates

2. Second Round
        Deadline: June 12, 2016
        Result Announcement: July 4, 2016
        Required Document: First draft
- Essays should not exceed 5,000 words (excluding abstract, keywords, and references).
- Essays must be submitted and formatted in Microsoft Word
- Use Times New Roman, 11-points, 1.5 interlinear spacing. Text should be justified.

3. Final Draft Submission
        Due July 31, 2016: Final draft after consultation with the reviewers
        Due July 31, 2016: PowerPoint (or other types of visual aids) for presentation

4. Essay Presentation and Award Ceremony
        Date: Wednesday, August 10, 2016 2PM
        Venue: Hotel Kukdo, Seoul, Republic of Korea
        Finalists will attend the conference to present their papers and participate in discussion with other discussants.

Awards
One first-place winner and one second-place winner will be selected and announced at the conferenceon Wednesday, August 10, 2016. The finalists’ papers will be published online as a series of EPIK Journals OnlineonEAI website.

        1st-place winner: 2,000,000 KRW
        2nd-place winner: 1,000,000 KRW

*Travel expenses will not be covered by EAI.

Importance

1. All requirements must be submitted by each deadline only electronically to epik@eai.or.kr.
2. Papers that poorly address the theme with irrelevant ideas and/or not meeting all requirements will be disqualified from the contest.
3. About plagiarism policy, refer to www.plagiarism.org.
4. Essays must be written by one person. Co-authored essays are not accepted.
5. Only original and unpublished essays will be considered for the competition.
6. Essays must be submitted in MS word format.
