Starting from March 1, the library of Korea University (KU) issued a new policy for university and graduate school alumnus. From now on, graduates who wish to use university library should pay annual fee of 100,000 won per year, or 50,000 per semester. Registration period has begun on February 23, except for prospective graduates on February this year, who were able to register after February 25.

To register, applicants should first pay the annual fee, and then check for their payment after one hour by phone or library visit. Afterwards they could renew their period of usage according to their amount and date of payment. For instance, if someone paid 100,000 won on February 26, he or she could use the library from March 1, 2015 to February 28, 2016. Usage period renewal can be done from 9 A.M. to 10 P.M. on weekdays and until 3 P.M. on Saturday during the semester. Renewal on the very day of payment is possible only when the payment is made before 4 P.M.

Previously, such annual fee policy did not exist. Instead, graduates could enter library reading rooms by using former student identification cards, while loans of books and reading digital references outside school were restricted. This change could be positive considering the possibility of full library usage, but the fact that using reading rooms is possible only through payment seems to gather skepticism.

There were other opinions as well, however. Nam Jung Hwan ('09, International Studies) said that this is an inevitable change. "The number of graduates are increasing, while services are limited. Thus the library should collect money from graduates to maintain," he said. More observation is needed to examine the effectiveness of such change.
