On August 12, the Student Union of the Korea University (KU) College of Medicine and the KU Emergency Central Steering Committee issued a statement criticizing the government’s recent plan to increase the admissions quota at medical schools and establish a new public medical school.

In a statement titled “The administration and legislature must acknowledge the professionalism of medical education and show responsibility for the educational rights of medical students,” the two student bodies argued that the government’s new bill gravely damaged the independence of special education and the need for surveillance on higher education. Pointing to another flaw, they further argued that increasing the admissions quota at medical schools while neglecting the discussion on increasing the infrastructure and faculty alongside will lead to a decrease in educational resources.

The government’s new decision, which was announced on July 23, has provoked great controversy in Korean society, even leading to a nationwide doctors’ strike. The statement echoed similar sentiments, claiming, “As college students living in the same era as those who will be deprived of their educational rights in the future, we stretch out a hand of solidarity.” Amid the conflicting opinions around the bill, the public backlash from the medical community only seems to increase by the day.
