On September 23, a special lecture titled ¡°Chinese Culture – The More You Know, the More You See¡± was held at the Korea University (KU) New Engineering Building. The lecture was hosted by the KU Innovation Center for Engineering Education (KUICEE).

In the lecture, Professor Kim Joonyoun (Department of Chinese Language and Literature) primarily discussed the importance of understanding the underlying factors behind certain aspects of Chinese culture that are viewed in a negative light. He borrowed the example of the abundance of ¡°imitation¡± products in China, and explained that it came from a combination of three factors: the income gap in China, the importance of saving one¡¯s face, and China¡¯s ¡°Cha Bu Duo¡± culture. He then emphasized that such insight into the hidden aspects of Chinese culture will help South Korea deal wisely with the double-edged sword – the Chinese market.

¡°Hate comes from the inability to distinguish between different and wrong, which is never the same thing,¡± said Professor Kim. ¡°In order to thrive in this world of globalization, we must first acquire a thorough understanding of others¡¯ cultures.¡± In this age where hatred toward other cultures has become so common, learning to look beyond the surface indeed seems a valuable mindset.
